What InBody measures

InBody uses bioelectrical impedance to estimate how your weight divides into muscle, fat, and water — including segmental regions (arms, legs, trunk) — so you see change that a bathroom scale can miss.

Skeletal Muscle Mass

Track muscle distribution across arms, legs, and trunk — not just total weight.

Body Fat Percentage

Segmental body fat analysis far more precise than a BMI calculation alone.

Hydration & Water Balance

Intracellular and extracellular water levels — a key marker for cellular health.

Metabolic Rate Estimate

Basal metabolic rate based on lean mass, useful for guiding weight management.

Who InBody is right for

InBody isn't for everyone — your clinician will confirm it fits your situation. It is often especially helpful when:

  • Weight management, obesity care, or breaking a plateau beyond the scale
  • Metabolic health — diabetes, pre-diabetes, insulin resistance, or cholesterol goals
  • Muscle preservation or building — athletes, older adults, or post-illness recovery
  • A baseline before nutrition counseling or a structured lifestyle program
  • Tracking change over time with objective numbers — not day-to-day weight noise
Please note: InBody may not be appropriate with certain implanted cardiac devices or during pregnancy. Tell us before you scan.

Your visit, step by step

Here's how we typically run an InBody experience at our office. (Exact timing may vary by appointment type — always follow staff instructions.)

  1. 1

    Arrive & check in

Come as you are for a primary care visit that includes InBody (or a scan-only slot, if offered). Wear light clothing; you’ll remove shoes and socks for the scan. Our team will confirm it’s safe for you that day.

  2. 2

    Quick scan

You’ll step on the InBody platform and hold the handles. The scan is non-invasive, uses no radiation, and usually takes under two minutes.

  3. 3

    In-depth results review

A trained staff member ensures the reading is high quality, prints or saves your results, then spends about 15 minutes with you on a structured, in-depth walkthrough—explaining your test results clearly in plain language so you understand what each metric means for you.

  4. 4

    Optional visit with your clinician

If you need or want a physician or nurse practitioner to discuss your results in a medical context—medications, labs, or a personalized plan—you can schedule an appointment to review your InBody with your doctor or NP. That may be the same day when available or a separate visit, depending on how you book.

The two-tier model

We separate the scan from the clinical interpretation so you always know what to expect — and when a physician or nurse practitioner is part of the conversation.

Tier 1 — Scan & staff review

Fast, structured, hands-on

You complete the InBody; our team ensures a quality reading, prints or saves your results, then guides you through roughly 15 minutes of in-depth review—explaining your test results clearly and what each section of the printout means. This tier focuses on accuracy and education, not prescribing or changing medications. If you need a clinician discussion, you can schedule an appointment with your doctor or NP to go deeper on your results.

Tier 2 — Clinician interpretation

Your chart, your goals, your plan

When you have a scheduled visit with your physician or nurse practitioner, InBody is woven into your medical history, labs, medications, and lifestyle goals. That's when we translate numbers into clinical decisions — follow-up labs, medication adjustments, referrals, or referrals to nutrition — as appropriate. This may be the same visit as your scan or a separate appointment, depending on how your visit is booked. If you start with staff review only and later need a doctor visit to discuss results, we can help you schedule that.

Frequently asked questions

What is InBody body composition analysis?

InBody is a quick, non-invasive scan that estimates skeletal muscle mass, body fat percentage, segmental composition, hydration, and related metrics—giving a fuller picture than weight or BMI alone. Your clinician interprets results in context with your history and goals.

How long does an InBody scan take?

The scan itself usually takes under two minutes. When included, plan for about 15 minutes of staff-led review so your results are explained clearly—plus additional time if you are also scheduled with a physician or nurse practitioner that day.

Do I need to fast before an InBody scan?

Follow any instructions the office gives you when you book. For many patients, fasting is not required for InBody, but eating a very large meal or heavy exercise right before the scan can affect hydration-related readings. When in doubt, ask us when you schedule.

How often should I get scanned?

Frequency depends on your goals and your clinician’s plan—some patients repeat every few months to track progress; others use it as a one-time baseline. We’ll recommend an interval that makes sense for you.

Who is InBody helpful for?

It can support patients focused on weight management, metabolic health, muscle tracking, or lifestyle coaching—when your clinician recommends it as part of your care plan.

What is the two-tier model (staff vs. clinician)?

Tier 1 is the scan plus about 15 minutes of staff-led, in-depth review—we explain your results clearly in plain language (education, not prescribing). Tier 2 is when a physician or nurse practitioner integrates InBody with your chart, medications, and goals for medical decision-making. If you need a clinician discussion after Tier 1, you can schedule an appointment with your doctor or NP to review results. The same visit may include one or both tiers, depending on how your appointment is scheduled.

Is InBody safe for everyone?

InBody may not be appropriate for people with certain implanted devices or during pregnancy. Discuss with your clinician before scheduling.
